A New Wind of Brass on the Grasslands
News Summary:
In 2023 a youth brass band was founded at Guoluo Xining Ethnic Middle School in Guoluo Prefecture. It is the first Tibetan‑ethnic youth brass ensemble in China. Since 2020, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music has been running a “Cultural Enrichment on the Border” program that trains minority‑culture artists in Guoluo, helping the project take root locally.
Today the band counts almost a hundred members, about 70 % of whom come from herding families. The ensemble gives students more chances to practice, perform, and grow. It enriches school life and also builds a new bridge of connection between families and the wider community.
